ShihPoo Information

Dietary Advice for ShihPoos

ShihPoos are affectionate, intelligent dogs that are a mix of the Shih Tzu and Poodle. Because they are a small breed with moderate energy levels, proper nutrition plays an important role in keeping them healthy and active throughout their lives.

A high-quality dog food formulated for small breeds is typically the best choice for ShihPoos. Look for foods that list real meat, such as chicken, beef, or salmon, as the first ingredient and contain balanced amounts of protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. Puppies require specially formulated puppy food to support growth, while adult and senior dogs benefit from diets tailored to their age and activity level.

Portion control is important, as ShihPoos can gain weight easily. Most adult ShihPoos do well with two meals a day, but the exact amount should be based on their size, age, and exercise level. Fresh water should always be available, and treats should be given in moderation to avoid excessive calorie intake.

Some ShihPoos may have sensitive stomachs or food allergies. If your dog experiences itching, digestive upset, or frequent ear infections, consult your veterinarian about possible dietary changes or limited-ingredient foods. Foods that are toxic to dogs—including chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol, and alcohol—should always be kept out of reach.

Combined with regular exercise and routine veterinary care, a balanced diet will help your ShihPoo maintain a healthy weight, support a shiny coat, and enjoy a long, happy life.
